FOR so-called NGO FILMS
- MAKE THE FILM ON AN ISSUE AND THE PEOPLE
(except when doing an internal video report of the activities)
- GIVE THE PEOPLE A VOICE THROUGH INTERVIEWS AND ACTIONS
- KEEP THE VOICE-OVER LENGTH AT A MAXIMUM OF 30 % OF THE DURATION OF THE FILM
- DON’T PUT TOO MUCH OF INFORMATION – FIGURES ETC - IN THE FILM – CONCENTRATE ON EMOTIONS
- FIND A CHARACTER TO YOUR FILM AND GET AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE CHARACTER
- HAVE A CLEAR FOCUS, QUESTION OR CONFLICT TO SEARCH OR
TO SOLVE DURING THE FILM – BUT START
- DON’T PUT TOO MANY THEMES WITHIN ONE FILM
- ALLOW TIME FOR VIEWER’S THOUGHT / BREATH IN THE FILM
- PLAN FOR TRANSITION SHOTS DURING SHOOTING
- MAKE A FILM NOT AN NGO FILM

- CHOOSE THE CHARACTER OF YOUR FILM AND SHOW HIM / HER THROUGH THE FILM (the character can be also something else than a human being) AND GO AS CLOSE TO HIM / HER AS POSSIBLE
- FOR THE WHOLE FILM: DEFINE THE STORY – THE BASIC STORY LINE – AND
FOR BUILD EVERY SEQUENCE AS A STORY AS WELL
- IF YOU HAVE A THEMATIC STRUCTURE, GIVE TIME TO BREATHE BETWEEN
THE THEMES AND FIND A LOGIC FOR TRANSITION FROM ONE THEME TO ANOTHER ONE
- TRY TO CATCH HUMAN MOMENTS IN THE FILM INSTEAD OF INFORMATION
- TRY TO INTERVIEW PEOPLE MID OF THEIR ACTIVITIES NOT IN STAGED POSITION AND ASK ALSO QUESTIONS WHICH ARE UNPREDICTABLE TO HAVE A HUMAN TOUCH
- WHEN USING THE MUSIC EDIT THE SEQUENCE WITH THE MUSIC, DON´T JUST ADD THE MUSIC AFTERWARDS
- WHEN STRUCTURING YOU FILM FORGET YOUR NOTES AND JUST BY MEMORY LIST 15 MOST INTERESTING / MEMORABLE SHOTS / SEQUENCES THAT YOU REMEMBER FROM THE MATERIAL AND PUT THEM IN PREFERABLE ORDER
- DON´T PACK TOO MUCH IN TOO LITTLE A BOX, MAKE PREFERENCES WHAT
IS MOST IMPORTANT, TOUCHING, ELEMENTARY FOR THE FILM - GIVE ENOUGH TIME AND LENGTH TO A GOOD EMOTIONAL STORY
- DON´T USE MANY SHOTS TO TELL EXACTLY THE SAME STORY,INFORMATION
- SILENCE IS GOLDEN, GIVE TIME TO SILENCE ALSO
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST
THINK IF YOUR FAMILY AND CHILDREN OR NEIGHBOURS WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE FILM OR NOT |
