Documentary Appreciation Workshop
THE PROGRAMME
10 - 11.30 am
What is documentary? Examining the construction of the ‘Document’ in documentary practice,
in an interactive way with the participants. Trace the emergence of documentary practice in early 20th century
through examples of American “ethnographies” on indigenous people.
Contiguously, trace the emergence of documentary in Indian cinema practice,
starting from early 20th century Raj; establishment of the Films Division of India;
use of documentary in Nation building discourse post 1947.
Through discussions with the participants, arrive at certain key elements of
storytelling in non-fiction / fiction cinema like Image, Sound, Time and Representation
and the relationship of narrative to historical and subjective time.

Explorations of the India Documentary, through the idea of the City/ Urban, with excerpts.
Through this section, foreground the personal and political in cinema practice;
Funding and Independent practice and its influence on image and cinema making;
Creative interpretations and subversions in storytelling.
